UMD | Sport and Health Center HVAC Upgrades

Duluth, MN

In the fall of 2016, the team started working on developing 3 options to upgrade the old and inefficient HVAC, lighting, and control systems at the UMD Sports and Health Center Building. The task was to define an option to:

  1. Bring the building up to code.
  2. Upgrade the HVAC systems to more efficient systems and replace all the lighting with LED lamps.
  3. Add a new penthouse, provide high end energy efficient systems, make provisions for solar hot-water and photovoltaic systems on the Romano roof. In this option, the Romano roof was to be demoed and a new roof installed, because the existing roof did not meet current snow loading.

This lower cost option was added focusing on the gymnasium spaces within the building. The emphasis was on the Romano gym because the space was uncomfortable to use for summer programming and the existing wood floor was damaged from the high humidity experienced in the summer. The replacement of the wood athletic floor was added to the project.
