Saint John’s University | Science Center

Saint John’s is renowned for its Marcel Breuer buildings. This new science structure respects and complements the original Breuer science building in both design and use of materials. The addition primarily houses biological sciences and provides faculty offi ces as well as an animal museum. The dramatic entry is marked by a copper-clad cupola that is lit from the interior by fiber optics. A suspended pendulum records the earth’s rotational movement and a video wall features scientific programming. The renovation of the four-story Breuer building provides space for the physics, psychology, mathematics, geology and astronomy departments.

The building renovation includes laboratories, classrooms and faculty offices. The mechanical, electrical and communications systems were completely updated to current standards. The renovation preserved the detailing and design of this historic landmark Breuer building. The renovation preserved all of the existing materials on the exterior and restored interior finishes compatible with the original Breuer design.
