A Bright New Chapter for Minnesota North College

October 23, 2025

Minnesota North College’s Vermilion campus in Ely recently celebrated the completion of a long-awaited renovation to its classroom building, transforming a dated facility into a modern, welcoming environment that supports today’s students.

This project, with funding initially requested in 2016, marks an important step forward for Minnesota North College. The redesign not only improves the functionality and flexibility of the learning spaces but also reflects the college’s new brand identity, which unites its six campuses across northeastern Minnesota under a shared vision.

Architecture Advantage worked closely with the college and project partners to create a space that is both practical and inspiring—one that embodies the spirit of Minnesota North and enhances the student experience.

Key improvements include:

Accessible and inclusive design: All bathrooms were fully updated to meet ADA compliance, ensuring that the facility is comfortable and usable for every member of the campus community.

Flexible learning environments: Four smaller, outdated classrooms were combined into two larger, multipurpose spaces designed to support a variety of teaching styles and technologies. The new layout encourages collaboration, adaptability, and hands-on learning.

Inviting interiors and enhanced lighting: A full overhaul of finishes and lighting has transformed the interior atmosphere. Bright, modern materials and energy-efficient fixtures create a warm, engaging environment that promotes focus and well-being.

Unified campus identity: The new design incorporates the college’s updated branding, featuring refreshed color palettes, wall graphics, and a prominently displayed MN North logo. These visual cues connect Vermilion with the larger Minnesota North system and foster a sense of pride and belonging.

Vibrant student gathering areas: Comfortable seating, natural wood accents, and acoustic baffles create dynamic spaces for studying, socializing, and collaboration. These areas provide students with a true sense of community and connection outside the classroom.

The Vermilion campus is now better equipped to serve its students and adapt to evolving educational needs. The revitalized classroom building reflects Minnesota North College’s commitment to providing high-quality learning environments, and Architecture Advantage is proud to have helped bring this vision to life.
